Public Works Department

The Highway Department and the Cemetery Department formally became one Department of Public Works (DPW) on May 18, 2024 as a result of the Charter change vote at the Annual Town Election.

The DPW Director

In Stow, the DPW Director is vested with the powers of cemetery commissioners and superintendents of streets in the General Laws. Brian Hatch, DPW Director, is responsible for the ordinary repair and maintenance of over 60 miles of public and private ways in the Town, and in addition: 

  • Directs and administers the combined departments of Highway and Cemetery
  • Coordinates the repairs, maintenance, and construction of Town roads, parking lots, bridges, culverts, storm water systems (drainage), sidewalks, and traffic control signs
  • Coordinates snow & ice control for roads and municipal parking lots
  • Applies for state and federal funds
  • Oversees contractors working for the town
  • Is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of the department's snow removal and construction equipment
  • Oversees maintenance of the Town's two commons and Town building grounds
  • Coordinates with the Town Tree Warden for care of Town owned public shade trees
