Perambulation Of Town Bounds

Fall / Winter 2020 - 2021

Members of the Board of Selectmen (along with designated alternates) will be visiting town boundary markers and painting them "16", in accordance with centuries-old tradition and still-current state law.

Part of the point is passing down knowledge of where the corners are.

Because of Covid concerns, we are keeping our “teams” smaller than usual.  Residents who are interested in joining us are asked to email Selectwoman Ellen Sturgis, who will be coordinating the teams and schedules.  This will be a multi-day process and subject to cancellation if granite is too wet (or cold)  to paint. Those interested in this and future sessions should write to Ellen at esturgis@stow-ma.gov and she will contact you as dates are set.

Anyone participating should come with long pants and hiking boots and be prepared for significant walking (perhaps a mile or two total, perhaps less), some of it off trail, and expect to bring home some ticks.  More than half of the bounds are located directly on roads.

Since bug spray can damage the plastic associated with the equipment being carried, please apply bug spray beforehand or use a non-spray application if near equipment.  We will at times be on private property, and as courtesy to landowners and others in the party ask that there be no audio or video recording (we won't be asking landowners’ permission for this).  Some landowners might prefer to only admit official perambulators; we'll try to arrange those at the end, but access to some locations is difficult and we must prioritize getting to those places.
