Brownie Troop 2525 holds their weekly meetings in the library in the meeting room on the second floor. They saw that the flag in that room that they say the pledge of allegiance to every meeting was in tatters and pieces of it were falling onto the floor. It is a very old flag, having just 48 stars, probably from 1950 or even earlier. Seeing a way to provide a public service to the Town, they took all of the profits of their cookie sale money and purchased a new flag for the library’s meeting room.
At 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 1, the troop met in full Brownie uniform at the library’s second floor meeting room to have a special flag ceremony in which they would present their just purchased flag to the librarian to replace the old flag. First the Brownie in Charge, Lexi Traverse, and the Flag Presenter, Erica Taft came down the isle and stood in front of the old library flag. Then three flag bearers came down the isle, Emily Suleski holding a pole with a small American Flag, April Mishley holding a pole with a small Stow flag, and Alicia Burrows carrying the new American flag. They were followed by the Color Guard consisting of Abigail Bernklow, Larissa Plishevsky, Lily Vesce, Emily Recko and Brooke Perisho.
First the pledge of allegiance was recited by all present facing the old 48-star flag for the last time. Then the flag ceremony was recited with each scout participating. After the new flag was presented to Susan Wysk, the head librarian, all participated in the singing of America the Beautiful.
After the ceremony was completed, a group picture was taken around the new flag. But before retiring to devour a large chocolate cake, the scouts made sure that the old flag was properly folded and placed into a storage bag waiting for proper disposition, possibly storing it in the Town vault along with other very old significant flags that proudly served their duty in our Town.
